KATY GORDON: Fife mum’s heartbreaking letter to missing teen son reminded me of my own struggles
My heart was breaking this week for mum Lisa Tarling, whose teenage son jumped from the Tay Road Bridge earlier this month and is yet to be found.
She watched footage of 17-year-old Phoenix Birkett jumping into the water, despite police advising her not to.
And despite the pain that caused, and the agony of not having found his body yet, Lisa has found the strength to tell their story and try to fight to stop other people struggling with their mental health from doing what Phoenix did.
She wrote: “My dearest Phoenix, I find myself thinking about you in the quiet moments, the ones that used to belong to us.
“Late at night, when the world slowed down, and we’d talk about anything and everything, or sometimes nothing at all.
“Those were never just small moments to me – they were everything.”
She adds: “And your hugs… I miss them more than I can ever properly explain.
“There was something about them – solid, grounding, like for a second everything in the world was okay. I didn’t realise just how much I would need one........
