If sex offenders are working with kids, parents have the right to know

Imagine signing your child up for weekend sports which is umpired by a convicted sexual predator.

Imagine further that not only have the authorities permitted this man to supervise children, but they also insist that no one can know he is a sex offender because of the embarrassment that it might cause him.

That’s the reality currently facing some Victorian parents.

A ruling last week by Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) deputy president Ian Proctor reinstated a convicted sex offender’s working with children’s card allowing him to umpire children’s AFL matches.

The sex offender’s identity has also been suppressed by VCAT.

According to the VCAT Decision, the sex offender, aged 57, identified only as “MFK” was convicted in 1984 of sexual penetration of a girl under the age of 16.

In 2010 MFK was convicted of another sex crime. This time for exposing himself to a woman and then stalking her.

In 2013 he was charged with wilful and obscene exposure in public for allegedly masturbating in a public park in view of a woman. The charges were later dismissed after the man........
