Debate sparked after 1,600 drivers caught speeding in Wiltshire

More than 1,600 drivers being caught speeding in Wiltshire sparked a lot of discussion.

Speed Enforcement Officers targeted various locations across the county, conducting checks in a range of locations.

Of the 1,646 drivers caught, police figures show that 1,420 were offered speed awareness courses, while 208 face financial penalties and penalty points. Eighteen motorists will be appearing in court for the most serious offences.

As Wiltshire Police urged drivers to adjust their speed for winter weather and road conditions, readers took to social media to weigh in on the crackdown – and the responses were anything but one-sided.

Some comments reflected support for stricter enforcement and reminded people why limits exist.

Ann-denise Cullingford said: “Just trying to stop people getting killed. Speed limits are for a reason.”

John Browning-gower said: “Got a Christmas party to pay for I guess.

“For some people [speeding] is therapeutic and helps clear your head so can move pass things and it’s the only thing that helps, maybe up the speed limits instead.”

Malcolm Golding replied: “If one if these speeders hit your family are you still gonna blame Mr Plod? You sir are a sad clown.”
