Transparency and Hamilton city hall

3 0 0

After a marathon late night meeting last week, Hamilton city council decided during an in camera portion that an independent external review of the Red Hill Valley Parkway is warranted after finding a "lost" 2013 report that indicated safety issues with the roadway surface. This decision is in response to calls from almost everyone for a judicial review of just what happened to that 2013 report and, hopefully, how to ensure it doesn't happen again. How it took council so long to decide to call for the review is a problem; this should have been a no-brainer decision. As the deliberations were in camera, the public is left in the dark as to council's thinking on this matter, as well as the directions they plan to give the independent reviewer(s), in itself an oxymoronic concept. Council needs to completely step aside from this issue and let a truly external independent review happen.

If you recall, my last column was on the equity and diversity tool kit that Mayor Eisenberger commissioned from an external consultant during his first term in office, five years ago. He promised during that campaign to implement such a process at city hall. This report, this tool kit, has also been lost to the vaults of city hall........
