The untapped power of the disability community in the U.S. sports economy

The business of disability and sport is the most overlooked asset in the American sports economy today.

With more than 61 million Americans living with a disability, the potential for growth, innovation and impact is undeniable. Yet for too long, the disability market has remained on the sidelines — underrepresented in strategic planning, undervalued in investment and underestimated in its influence on fan culture, product design and market potential.

That tide is turning.

Today, sport-related businesses that prioritize accessibility and inclusion are not only leading on values — they’re also gaining a competitive edge. From facility design and grassroots programs to adaptive equipment, inclusive fan experiences and breakthrough technology, the market for adapted sport is rapidly evolving. As the United States prepares to host two Paralympic Games in the next decade — Los Angeles in 2028 and Salt Lake City in 2034 — sport businesses have a historic opportunity to lead through innovation, collaboration and competition.

As Andrew Parsons, president of the International Paralympic Committee, recently stated: “Inclusion is no longer just a moral imperative — it is an underleveraged growth asset.”
