All eyes will be on Caerffili this week for the Senedd by-election. This promises to be a bellwether election ahead of next May’s wider poll to see who leads the next Welsh Government.

Support for the party of the political status quo in Wales – Labour – has evaporated. This has been borne out in the people I have spoken to on behalf of the Plaid Cymru candidate Lindsay Whittle. It has also been underlined by the only constituency poll conducted which placed Labour on a mere 12 per cent of the vote.

It is hard to pinpoint the exact reason for Labour support evaporating as it varies between age group........
