Why type on a computer keyboard when you can use your thoughts to interact with ChatGPT? What sounds like futuristic science-fiction is possible today thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) that power brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies. On Wednesday, MindPortal Inc. unveiled its non-invasive optical BCI that allows human thoughts to navigate ChatGPT, the AI-powered large language model by OpenAI.

According to a statement by Ekram Alam, CEO and Co-Founder of MindPortal, their solution represents a breakthrough for the brain-computer interface industry: “For the first time, we have successfully enabled telepathic communication between humans and artificial intelligence." According to Jack Baber, CTO and co-founder, "We're enabling telepathic communication between humans and AI, ensuring humanity thrives alongside artificial intelligence."

Brain-computer interface devices are systems that analyze brain signal activity in real-time in order to convert the electrophysiological signals into the user’s intended commands to power external devices. BCIs are neurotechnology devices powered by artificial intelligence that offers hope to those with disabilities by enabling users to use thoughts to control external devices to then control robotic limbs, communicate via speech synthesizers, move cursors on computing devices, and more applications.

BCIs can be invasive or non-invasive solutions. For example, Elon Musk’s neurotech startup Neuralink is an invasive implantable brain-computer interface that requires a surgical procedure for insertion.

What sets the MindPortal solution apart is that it is a non-invasive optical-sensor BCI that harnesses the pattern-recognition capabilities of AI machine learning to decode full sentences versus individual words, in real-time.

The brain-computer interface industry is an estimated USD 2 billion market in 2023 that is expected to increase to USD 6.2 billion by 2030 with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 17.5 percent during 2023-2030, according to Grand View Research. Most of the activity is expected to be in North America, with nearly 40 percent market share in 2022 due to with a number of clinical trials underway and the continued rise of neurodegenerative diseases.
