China unpacks anti-poverty playbook
THE launch of the Global Partnership for Poverty Alleviation and Development (GPPAD) by China on May 27 in Beijing marks a significant milestone in international efforts to combat poverty and promote sustainable development. Established through the joint initiative of China, 53 countries and nine international organizations, the partnership reflects the extensive knowledge and practical experience China has accumulated through decades of poverty reduction work both domestically and internationally. The formation of the GPPAD comes at a critical moment. According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), approximately 1.1 billion people across 109 countries continue to experience multidimensional poverty. At the same time, nearly 887 million vulnerable individuals are facing the dual challenges of poverty and severe climate-related risks. With progress toward the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030 slowing in many developing regions, the new partnership seeks to provide a practical and action-oriented framework to address these challenges.
At its core, the GPPAD is built on the principles of equality, mutual respect shared learning. It recognizes every nation’s right to pursue poverty alleviation and development policies that align with its unique social, economic cultural conditions.
