'I can't believe it's legal' - The get-cash-quick loans that are 'destroying' lives

LoanBan, a Norfolk-based group, is calling for laws to be changed to help protect vulnerable people such as those with gambling addictions from high-interest loans.

Companies have been offering small amounts of cash ranging from £50 to £5,000 for several years, offering a chance to get a quick financial boost to help cover expenses before the next payday.

Limited checks are required to get the cash, which makes it readily accessible.

However, this short-term relief from a low bank balance risks individuals getting locked into a "vicious cycle" of debt due to the huge interest rates applied.

LoanBan campaigners say a loan of £5,000 has left one individual struggling to now pay off £26,000 - a 420pc increase.

Some rates can be as high as nearly 2,000pc APR (annual percentage rate).

Having seen the hardship faced by close friends and family members who have been affected by the loans, Kathy Blake, 36, from Thorpe St Andrew, started LoanBan.
