New Delhi: A mother in Karnataka’s Belagavi district allegedly strangled her three-day-old newborn daughter because she did not want “another girl.” Police identified the accused as Ashwini Halkatti, a resident of Hiremulangi village in Ramdurg taluk. She already has three daughters.

According to reports, Ashwini delivered her fourth child, a girl, on November 23 at the Mudakavi Primary Health Centre. She returned to her parental home the following day. On Tuesday morning, when Ashwini’s mother briefly stepped outside, the accused allegedly strangled the infant. She subsequently pretended that the child was not breathing and raised an alarm.
