Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan have signed a defence pact. Should India be worried?

Some analysts have started calling it an "Islamic NATO" because it brings together three of the most influential Muslim-majority countries under one defence framework. The idea has been around for some time.

New Delhi: Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan—have signed a new defence agreement called the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement. The agreement says that if one of the three countries is attacked, it will be considered an attack on all. The three governments say the pact is purely defensive. They say it is meant to improve regional security and maintain peace.

But there is one important catch. The full agreement has not been made public. We still don’t know exact terms of the pact. Will they send troops? Share intelligence? Supply weapons? Or simply offer political backing? Right now, nobody knows.

So why is it being called an “Islamic NATO”?
