New Delhi: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) skipper Faf du Plessis and Punjab Kings (PBKS) stand-in captain Sam Curran were fined for Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct breaches on Monday. Du Plessis copped a Rs 12 lakh fine, while the Punjab Kings captain has been penalised 50 percent of his match fees for their respective offences as announced by the IPL.

Du Plessis was fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during the thriller against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) which RCB lost by a run to endure a seventh loss of the season at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. It is RCB’s first over-rate offence of the season.

“Mr Faf du Plessis, Captain, Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 36 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 21, 2024,” an IPL statement read.

Curran, on the other hand, was fined as much as 50 percent of his match fees for a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which concerns with “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision” during PBKS’ flop show as Gujarat Titans (GT) beat them by three wickets in Mullanpur on Sunday.

“Curran committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” an IPL media release stated.

It is to be noted that Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct includes several conditions for which a player can be fined – “(a) excessive, obvious disappointment with an Umpire’s decision; (b) an obvious delay in resuming play or leaving the wicket; (c) shaking the head; (d) pointing or looking at the inside edge when given out LBW,” to quote a few.
