New Delhi: Flamboyant wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant has been out of action after being involved in a near-fatal car crash in late December 2022. He underwent multiple surgeries and went through a rigorous recovery process after which he looks set to return to action in the Indian Premier League for the 2024 season. Pant missed cricket for India and for his IPL franchise Delhi Capitals in the 2023 season.

Delhi Capitals’ Director of Cricket, Sourav Ganguly has said that he is looking forward to Pant’s return to the side. In a conversation with RevSportz, Ganguly said that Pant is keen on making a return in the IPL 2023 and has been putting in the hard yards to achieve his fitness back. Pant has been seen on some recent sports shows, the latest being the conversation with Star Sports where he recalled his harrowing car crash.

“It’s a huge boost for Delhi Capitals because Indian players are gold in the IPL. Obviously, he has not played much cricket and I hope he gets back to rhythm very quickly. It’s been a while he is away from competitive cricket, almost 17-18 months. He has worked very hard to make a comeback. He is confident and wants to play for Delhi Capitals and India. I am extremely happy he is back and hope he gets through the season,” Ganguly said.

The 26-year-old was present in the IPL auction in Dubai in December 2023 as he sat with the Delhi Capitals’ management. Pant had also made several appearances in his team’s dugout to boost the morale of his teammates in the previous IPL season.

Many reports were saying that Pant might get to play as an Impact Player rather than getting a full-time role that may prove costly to his body. As Pant remained absent, David Warner led the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023 but didn’t make any impact. Capitals finished second last in the points table of the 023 season. They have added nine players ahead of the 2024 season to bolster themselves – notably Harry Brook, Tristan Stubbs, and Shai Hope.
