India’s monsoon set to retreat from September 19; 11 states face rainfall deficit

India's southwest monsoon is likely to withdraw from west Rajasthan around September 19, IMD says. Despite late-season rain, several agricultural states continue to face major rainfall deficits, with the south peninsula and east and northeast India among the worst-hit regions.

New Delhi: The southwest monsoon is likely to start withdrawing from India around September 19, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. The withdrawal will come as the country enters the final phase of the monsoon season, with several major agricultural states still facing significant rainfall deficits.

As of September 13, India’s overall monsoon rainfall deficit stood at 15 per cent. The shortage has been particularly severe in the south peninsula and east and northeast India. Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya are among the states where the deficit is unlikely........
