Opinion | Seven Political Events In India That Will Have Repercussions Beyond 2025

As 2025 disperses as trailing dust from time’s unstopping wheels, certain events in Indian politics this year have paved roads to the future. Their impact will be felt well beyond the present. They will keep shaping the course of politics next year, and some even after that.

First, take the Bihar election. On June 4, 2024, falling about 30 seats short of majority, the BJP looked stunned, shaky, and set to slide from the incredibly high pedestal it built for itself through hard work.

But the mammoth machinery turned itself around as nimbly and fiercely as a mother elephant saving its calf from danger. It won Haryana against all odds, swept Maharashtra, ended the dream run of India’s most successful political start-up AAP in Delhi, and stamped its dominance in Bihar with such brute force that the underperformance of 2024 lies almost forgotten.

It gives the BJP tremendous momentum to go into a slew of big, challenging elections in 2026: West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Assam.

Second, the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, passed in Parliament in April 2025, could potentially put an end to rampant land grab and geographic takeover. By........
