Trump’s control over Venezuelan oil: Letters to the Editor — Jan. 10, 2026

The Issue: President Trump controlling Venezuela’s oil sales following Nicolás Maduro’s capture.

You’re damn right, Nicolás Maduro’s capture is all about oil (“WH: It’s oil under control,” Jan. 8).

It’s about recouping the billions of dollars of American oil company assets and infrastructure stolen by Hugo Chávez and Maduro.

It’s also about driving down worldwide oil market prices — the same oil market that, when highly priced, allows Russia to finance its war against the people of Ukraine.

Venezuelans don’t need lectures from comfortable Americans who’ve never experienced tyranny. They know who destroyed their country, and are relieved he’s gone.

The claims that President Trump capturing Maduro was all about oil are bogus. The United States doesn’t need Venezuelan oil. If anything, a rebuilt Venezuelan oil industry will create competition for American producers.
