Women of colour, I urge you to register to vote

3 43 0

Before any voting period I set up a one-woman campaign – where it becomes my mission to encourage everyone in my vicinity to vote.

I believe there is no rational reason to not register to vote or go out and vote. Not a single one. No, we aren’t suddenly going to have enough of us reject the voting system to reform it. So, until this revolution occurs, I stand by my original statement.

Being a British Muslim, woman and person of colour at the best of times means feeling disenfranchised by UK politics as it continuously degrades and mocks me. A recent report from TellMAMA showed that Islamophobic incidents rose 375 per cent after Boris Johnson compared Muslim women to ‘bank robbers’ and ‘letterboxes’.

Johnson, now prime minister, is yet to apologise for his comments and reneged on launching an independent investigation on Islamophobic behavior in the Conservative party despite promising this on TV.

So, I hear you ask, ‘Why would I participate in politics, in voting?’ If not you, then who?

I’m genuinely frightened that we are leaving the present and future of this country to calculated and malicious, self-serving middle class, privileged white men like Boris Johnson........
