For disabled children, summer holiday provision is more difficult to find – and often a lot more expensive.

Families are opening up about the extortionate cost of summer holiday childcare provision for disabled children – and the postcode lottery that surrounds being able to access it in the first place.
Melissa Mould, who lives in south-west London and works in TV production, shares three children with her husband Andrew: two-year-old Remy, and their six-year-old twins Frankie and Otis.
Frankie has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair full-time. His family have found accessing suitable holiday provision for him extremely difficult – and when they are able to find support, it costs more than triple what they’d pay for Otis.
“The logistics of organising summer holiday childcare are so complicated when you have a disabled child – it exhausts me mentally,” said Melissa.
“There are endless holiday club options for Otis. For Frankie, there is nothing obvious that he can go to, even though we would be happy to send him to most types of clubs.”

Frankie loves music and playing instruments, while brother Otis is obsessed with football and reading. Theoretically, given these interests, finding summer childcare shouldn’t be an issue.
Yet the family has found provision for Frankie is severely lacking. And when Melissa is able to find spaces that cater to his needs, the cost is much more.
