Law firm chief's view on Scottish economy fascinating
It was interesting to hear last week what Laura McKnight, the new managing director of Glasgow-based law firm Macdonald Henderson, had to say about “succession” being a key issue for many clients and to get her view on the Scottish economy.
Ms McKnight, as reported exclusively by The Herald, has succeeded David Beveridge in the managing director post. Mr Beveridge, who has been in the post since leading the management buyout of the firm in 2009, will continue as head of corporate. And he will “continue to play a key role in the firm’s leadership and long-term growth”, Macdonald Henderson noted.
So what did the new managing director, who joined the firm in 2015, have to say about the Scottish economy?
Ms McKnight said: “The Scottish economy has proven itself to be remarkably resilient, over an exceptionally turbulent period of recent economic and political history.
“We have no concerns about the strength and appetite of our firm’s business client base - and the wider Scottish business community - to address and overcome the fiscal and economic headwinds we all face, both at local and macro level.”
This chimes very much with the mood music you sense from across the business community – that conditions have been and remain challenging but that firms have very much become used to dealing with this and getting on with things.
And Ms McKnight’s assessment is encouraging, against what is undoubtedly a tough backdrop.
Also heartening, from a broader economic perspective, is her revelation that Macdonald Henderson continues to enjoy a “strong pipeline of deals”.
She also highlighted positives on the relationship between businesses and government.
