Even close to four decades after the establishment of the first women’s studies centre, the subject is not an essential qualification at the entry level in most such centres, in Indian universities. When there are doctoral and post-graduation programmes being offered, a few centres even offering undergraduate courses, and the National Eligibility Test now being conducted in women’s studies, the question of eligibility criteria gains greater significance. Notably, the NET qualification in the concerned subject is a basic eligibility requirement to apply for an assistant professor position in the same subject at any university, as per the University Grants Commission rules.

In an advertisement for the position of assistant professor of women’s studies of a prominent institute of social sciences, the announcement clearly stated that the applicant should have an educational background in the discipline itself. The call for the position, six years ago, is an example of what the qualifications of faculty teaching women’s studies should be, at least at the entry level. It is distressing that one has to write about this today, when the subject has already emerged as a discipline within the university system since the late 1970s and 1980s in India.
