The authority has said it intends to take down the banners from lampposts on the town's clifftops. 

It says the flags will be replaced by its own "civic banners", although it has declined to say whether these will be national flags or other symbols. 

The Union flags have been fixed to lampposts by the group behind the Flagman UK Facebook page.

Some have already been taken down by members of the public, but the group have returned to the seafront and put up new ones. 

The scenes are reminiscent of those which played out over several weeks last summer, as 'Operation Raise the Colours' swept the county.
