Parking charges and council tax hikes loom as £2m car park takeover plan approved

Breckland Council’s cabinet has voted to begin the transfer of 16 car parks currently owned by the authority to four different towns across the district.

The decision follows months of talks with Dereham, Thetford, Watton, Attleborough and Swaffham town councils over the possibility of them taking ownership of local parking provisions.

Of Breckland’s five towns, Dereham, Thetford, Watton and Attleborough have all confirmed interest in taking on sites, while Swaffham has opted not to proceed with the takeover.

The car parks, with a combined value of almost £2 million, will nearly all be handed over free of charge.
