Former rugby star's family farm brings back cattle for the first time in 26 years

Former England rugby star Tom Youngs and his cousin George are the fourth generation of their family to run Sankence Farm near Aylsham.

Since taking over the reins from their fathers Nick and William, they have already invested in a wide range of diversifications to generate new income streams, including holiday lets, a livery yard, self-storage containers and free-range woodland pigs.

Their most recent new venture was the launch of their rugby-themed "Scrum and Bun" burger van this summer.

And now a pedigree Belted Galloway beef herd has also been added - bringing the first black-and-white cattle onto the farm since its 190-strong dairy herd was disbanded in 2000.

The breed was chosen for its ability to thrive on rough grazing - making use of an overgrown, nature-rich corner of the farm which is unsuited to arable cropping.

The herd has been started with three heifers from the Holkham Estate, but the plan is to build it up to around 20 animals - partly to supply meat for Scrum and Bun, but also to keep potential future options open, such as pedigree sales, pop-up farm shops or meat........
