Farm industry outlines 'fertiliser resilience plan' as Iran war sends costs soaring

The National Farmers' Union (NFU) says British agriculture's vulnerability to shocks in the global energy and fertiliser markets was exposed during the war in Ukraine, and now again following the US conflict with Iran.

Disruption to the major shipping channel the Strait of Hormuz continues to impact farmers.

In April, fertiliser prices had increased by almost 40pc compared to pre-war levels, says the NFU, exceeding £500 per tonne several times since the conflict began, with urea having reached £635/t and imported ammonium nitrate hitting £535/t.
