As a lifelong fan of mid-twentieth century pulp novel, film noir and science fiction heroes, I'm always keen on new characters carrying on this tradition. It's in this vein that I anxiously greeted future-cult classic, 'The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension', a genre-defying movie released in 1984. It was the year I also graduated from high school. Here's the official trailer:

The feature personified teen dreams of polymath protagonists in the mold of iconic 'Man of Bronze' Dr. Clark Savage, known as 'Doc Savage'. 'Doc' is the prototype for many crusaders, from Superman, Batman, super-spy James Bond to Dr. Buckaroo Banzai, played in the movie by Peter Weller. Here's a clip where Weller describes influences he poured into his portrayal of a 1980s 'Renaissance Man' who defies easy explanation:

This vignette about the film's director WD Richter offers more insight into a beautifully baffling production:

Buckaroo Banzai is an especially beloved character to me. I've always been drawn to heroes combining brain and brawn to exceptional levels. His co-horts personify an old adage of mine about having 'friends you could save the world with'.

I liked the film so much that I bought the novel by Banzai creator Earl Mac Rauch. It further fleshed out a world whose chief celebrity was a neurosurgeon, particle physicist, rock star and adventurer who advanced science, entertained millions and fought madmen intent on world domination. His 'Hong Kong Cavaliers' band mates, also scientists and adventurers, remind me of 'Doc Savage's colleagues known as the 'Famous Five Savage’ men were a lawyer, chemist, civil engineer, electrical engineer and archeologist with a taste for adventure. Banzai's folks represented every discipline under the sun. They were also very adventurous.

The novel and movie famously predicted the advent of cell phones shortly before they were invented.

He's someone I invite fans of heroic fiction to get acquainted with if they haven't already. We need 'can-do' characters like Buckaroo Banzai now more than ever for inspiration in today's topsy-turvy world.
