Bell: Nenshi on city hall, Calgarians very lucky

Nenshi puts up a straw man.

Some phony he can knock down with ease so he can avoid talking about real budget cuts.

The games begin Monday. The mayor takes aim at unnamed sorts he believes are saying the sky is falling and the world is ending.

Nenshi tries to reassure us.

The tax hikes in the budget aren’t big. The hit is about $300 over four years when selected rate increases are thrown into the mix.

That doesn’t include any increases in the province’s take on the city property tax bill.

But Nenshi says the tax hikes aren’t large. They won’t make a difference in most people’s lives.

Anyone who shows up Monday makes a budget presentation to city council. Most want money.

Every squeaky wheel is looking for grease.

Nenshi figures it’s only the loudest voices who think city hall’s Cowtown Kremlin is inefficient.

“We are very lucky because this city government is very, very, very well run and we’re going to continue to be very, very well run.”

Is very, very, very well run even better than super super duper well run?

The mayor adds city hall will be even more efficient though it’s getting harder because........
