I should have known better.

Bell: Half of Canadians are against strikes on Iran, is this all about Trump? Back to video

I should have known anything is possible when U.S. President Donald Trump is in the picture and the thought of him breaks the minds of so many Canadians.

On Tuesday Angus Reid Institute comes out with their latest nose count.

It is about the justified U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran.

Iran, a country ruled for decades by murderous fanatics who support and bankroll terrorists, who work on developing nuclear weapons, who terrorize their neighbours, who stockpile ballistic missiles, who kill their own people when they dare to want freedom, who threaten peace and security throughout the world.

Boomers should take a trip down memory lane. Remember when Canadians helped Americans out of Iran after the crazies took power in that country in 1979.

We are talking about that Iran.

Fast forward to the present. What do we see here?

In the number-crunching of Angus Reid half of Canadians oppose the U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran.

Only one-third support the strikes. Canada is not even involved in the air strikes. No matter.

You have to wonder what these Canadians are thinking.

Get this. Only 17 per cent of Liberal voters back the strikes against Iran. Fewer than 1 in 5.

Two out of three Conservative voters support the air strikes. There is a glimpse of sanity.

In every part of Canada those who oppose the U.S.-Israel air strikes outnumber those supporting them.

Every part of Canada except one. In one part of this country opinion is evenly split.

More questions from Angus Reid. Will life in Iran improve or worsen?

More Canadians polled say life in Iran will get worse rather than improve.

Interesting after the first air strikes the vast majority of Canadians of Iranian descent were celebrating.

Some carried signs thanking President Trump. That scene must have driven some Canadians out of their minds.

Will the world at large, Israel or Iran be more safe or less safe?

Good old Canadians. More of those answering feel Israel, the U.S. and the world will now be less safe rather than more safe.

Yes, Iran with piles of missiles and nuclear weapons would make the world far safer. Insert sarcasm here.

Just for the record, the number of Liberal voters polled who believe the world will be safer. Just one in every nine.

I shouldn’t be surprised.

Remember how many Canadians actually believed the Americans would invade Canada.

I am still waiting for the invasion. Guess we will have to wait until the Iran situation is cleared up and then we will be next on the hit list. Insert sarcasm here. Again.

You can’t help but be sarcastic.

It should come as no surprise Prime Minister Mark Carney spent Tuesday making sure he was more aligned with his Liberal team and his Liberal base of voters.

On the weekend the prime minister wanted to be clear and offered quick support for the U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran.

On Tuesday Carney said he supported the strikes with “regret” and added he feels the actions appear to be inconsistent with international law.

He calls for a rapid de-escalation of hostilities.

Carney no doubt hopes these words will comfort his anxiety-ridden Liberal supporters and calm their nightmares where Trump torments their inner selves.

This story isn’t about Iran or the Iranian people or what is good or bad for that country, a land that has suffered so much for so long.

This story isn’t really about Israel or even the U.S.

This is about the Trump psychodrama driving the political views of many Canadians.

It is Trump’s air strikes against Iran.

How would these naysaying Canadians feel if Barack Obama was the president taking the same action? What if Joe Biden was still president or Kamala Harris?

You know the answer. The poll results from the Liberals would be very different and much more supportive.

This scribbler is not trying to look into a crystal ball to see what will happen in the future.

It’s the future. Anything could happen.

But with the wickedness of the Iranian government and the evil they have spread in their own country and beyond you just might think more Canadians would know something had to be done, force had to be used, sooner than later.

You would think they would have heard of a place called the real world.

But the devil is in the details and, for a lot of Canadians, the devil is named Trump.

A puzzler not included in the Angus Reid poll.

Who do Canadians hate more, Trump or the late Supreme Leader of Iran?
