Oh, you have a chronic illness?

Two years ago, I came close to being among the one-in-five Australians living with chronic pain when I fractured two of my vertebrae. It took 18 months to make a full recovery – obviously among the lucky ones – but there were countless moments of profound fear the pain would remain permanent; that this was going to become my new daily reality.

That fear stemmed from witnessing several friends with back pain so severe they’re physically unable to get out of bed; from hearing about acquaintances with migraines so piercing they’re left debilitated for hours; from meeting relatives with arthritis so intense they find it impossible to type on a keyboard.

The statistics I mentioned earlier widen if you incorporate people with chronic illness, which the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates catches one-in-two members of the population.
