Tragedy or farce? It’s hard to decide which word gives the best flavor of British politics at the moment. Britain has to have an election before the end of January 2025. Yet both the ruling Conservatives and the opposition Labour party are doing their best to prove that they’re not worthy of forming the next government.

The Conservative party is a faction-ridden mess with a dismal record. The Party’s biggest decision — Brexit — has left Britain isolated in a world that is splitting into regional blocs. Even though the fights that bedevil the party are farcical — are you more of a Popular Conservative or a National Conservative or a One Nation Conservative? — they reflect a deep crisis of identity over what conservatism means in a post neo-liberal age.
