On the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, in Pearl Harbor, Sterling Cale had just wrapped up a shift working as a pharmacist’s mate in the Navy.

When he realized Pearl Harbor was under attack, he immediately sprang into action.

Over the next four hours, he picked up 45 people from the water around Battleship Row.

“Some were dead, some were badly burned, some were just tired,” he noted.

And for the next three weeks, he was one of a group of 10 men who worked together to remove bodies from the USS Arizona.

Cale’s story is one of many I read this week on the National Park Service’s Pearl Harbor page (https://www.nps.gov/perl/index.htm), alongside Gino Gasparelli, Everest Capra, Cecil Camp and more – and the common thread was one of quiet bravery and heroism.

Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack. Visit the website, read their stories, and pause for a moment to remember those who served.
