Who are you cheering for today, readers?

In this Super Bowl matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, I can’t say I have a preference either way.

I got a little excited about football this year when my Browns pulled off a winning record, a season that included a win against the Ravens on Nov. 12 and the Steelers on Nov. 19. For Browns fans, those are incredible victories. We even beat the 49ers on Oct. 15, and made it to the NFL Wild Card round on Jan. 13, where we had our dreams dashed by the Texans.

I’ll still tune in to the Super Bowl, but this year, it feels rather anticlimactic. I’m sure it will be a great matchup, and when both teams are all-in, it’s fun to watch, but at the moment, neither team stands out to me as “the one to cheer for.”

And normally, on Super Bowl Sunday, I get excited about the commercials. But anymore, that’s really challenging to do when they are available all over the place before the big game.

When businesses are paying somewhere in the neighborhood of $7 million for a 30-second spot, it’s surprising to me that they would want to show their commercials beforehand. Maybe it generates buzz ahead of time, but I find I’m hard-pressed to sit through a commercial I’ve already seen. That’s just a signal to me to go get a snack!

It’s not only the biggest day in the NFL, it’s arguably the biggest day in advertising. Showcasing the ads ahead of time ruins the surprise a bit.

However, I’m still going to turn the Super Bowl on. I’ll pick a team to cheer for somewhere in the first quarter, usually based on a random moment. One year, I cheered for a team simply because the quarterback had a positive interaction with a ref, despite the fact that the call was against said quarterback. It was a classy move, and I’ll cheer for that anytime.

I’ll watch the commercials too, because, hey – maybe I’ll still see something new.

But don’t be surprised if I flip over periodically to the Puppy Bowl on the Animal Channel! This year, Team Ruff and Team Fluff have 131 puppy stars taking the field, and, readers, it’s always fun to watch, at least for a few minutes! Those adorable little pups are too cute to miss!
