Like many of you, I sometimes grow tired of all the doom and gloom in the news. It’s gotten so bad that mental health professionals say some of their clients have had to take a break from the news because it was depressing and upsetting them. The biggest culprit cited was coverage of petty and divisive political antics.

As someone whose job is selecting Associated Press articles for the newspaper each day, I know it is important to carry “hard news” about war, crime, immigration and politics. But I strive to also publish “softer” stories to provide some balance. Stories about such topics as a teen gamer finally beating Tetris, a cute new breed of dog and advancements in Alzheimer’s treatment. We need stories like these to remind us that life isn’t all bad.

But if you find yourself in need of a news break to maintain your mental health, go for it. We won’t take it personally.
