Back in first grade, we had a “career day” where we were supposed to arrive at school dressed up as whatever profession we wanted to eventually pursue.

I wanted to be a marine biologist, but I didn’t know what they would wear, so I went to school dressed as a basketball player. In response, one of my friends had me spend my recess shooting baskets, which I disliked.

Looking back, I think that was the first subject area that I ever dreamed of pursuing as a child. But I also liked language arts, and I eventually majored in English (which led me to now write for you, dear reader!), though I still love to geek out with the aquatic animal content.

My latest fascination has been watching YouTube videos highlighting footage of the haunting bigfin squid (Magnapinna) being spotted at the depths of the ocean.

What are some of the early subjects that captured your attention growing up?
