The central union message has been, and should be, that their first priority is to work for the job security, rights and safety of all union members. The Charter statement of the Canadian Labour Congress provides the standard for all Canadian unions, with reference to “all members.”
But, in so many unions, gone are the days when employment and labour-related issues are their primary focus. Where unions were once a backbone of the workforce in Canada, focused on representing workers and their fight for fair and decent wages, health benefits, retirement security, dignity, and safe workplaces, they are now cesspools of hate and division that rocks their very foundation of solidarity and unity.
