We dips our lids to the old Diggers – it’s really their day

In 30 odd years of writing Anzac Day stories for the Herald – of lost lives and loves, blistering battles, stunning triumphs and shattering defeats – the one that most often comes to me in idle moments is a simple Anzac reunion story.

Indulge me a little, to tell it one more time for the road? See, in the mid-’90s, there was this scout leader Don Rose supervising his charges as they provided help to any Diggers who needed it, when, hang on ... what’s this? It is an old Digger, with glistening medals, and cheeks – as he leans against a building weeping.
