Vancouver's non-ABC councillors set to be stripped of extra roles and pay

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim is seeking to remove councillors from outside his ABC party from key city roles in an apparent reversal of an earlier vow to bring a spirit of cooperation when he was elected.

This week, if Vancouver’s ABC-majority council approves Sim’s recommended changes, roles such as Metro Vancouver board appointments, deputy mayor, acting mayor, and duty councillor will, for the first time this term, exclusively go to ABC caucus members.

Green councillors Adriane Carr and Pete Fry said they were disappointed, when this week’s council agenda was posted, to learn of their impending removal from some of these positions. They received no explanation from the mayor’s office or personal communication on the matter, they said.

After ABC’s dominant election victory in 2022, party members said despite their super-majority on city council, they would bring what they called a “post-partisan” approach to work with their Green and OneCity colleagues.

Soon after ABC’s October 2022 electoral win, Carr said, “The first proof of whether (Sim) is serious about being collaborative or not” would be how he handled her request to continue as a Metro Vancouver director.

Carr, Vancouver’s most experienced councillor, said she was pleased at the time........
