When they got here, they started a business, bought a home, and raised our family. My wife, Rebecca, and I chose to raise our three kids here, too, because we know how great this city is.

This year, our city is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and it has come a long way in that time. What started as a collection of small towns and villages is now the third-largest city in the province, and the second-largest economy.

We have a population of 800,000, and more than 60 Fortune 500 head offices. We’ve built hundreds of thousands of homes, commercial centres, and communities.

All of that has come together to make us one of the biggest and most desirable places to live and work in the entire country. It took vision to get here, with leaders who were always planning for the future. We’re a city that grows, that leads and builds.

But, there are a lot of challenges that face our city today.

People can’t find a place to live that they can afford. We aren’t building homes fast enough to meet demand. As someone with three kids, that really worries me. I want them to be able to do what I did — find a home in the city where they grew up.

We need more housing choices. We need purpose-built rentals and market housing. We need affordable and supportive housing. As a councillor, I’ve been working to cut red tape and legalize housing to get more homes built faster.

This isn’t a new thing for our city. For decades, we were the fastest growing city in the country, building more homes than anyone else.

Now we need to honour that legacy, by building homes in safe and complete communities. We need to keep investing in what makes our communities great. Neighbourhoods with safe streets, better transit, and public spaces.

We have a serious affordability crisis, and we need to do more. Food banks are seeing record usage, shelters have hit 321% capacity, and our neighbours and families are having trouble making ends meet. It is easy to blame others for these challenges, but people in power have a responsibility to tackle these challenges with more than just words.

As we reflect on 50 years of success, the people of Mississauga are being asked to look to the future again, and to choose the leader who will start us down the road of our next 50 years.

I believe the next leader of our city needs the energy and vision to carry us into the next phase of our city’s history.

I think that’s what this upcoming election will be about. Because change is coming.

And the choice in front of us is — how will we respond?

Will we show leadership, and plan for and manage that change?

Or will we ignore it, fight it or try to avoid it?

I think we need to lead — and I will run to be the Mayor that takes these challenges head on.
