GOLDSTEIN: Liberals’ tough talk on Iran today follows years of inaction
Why did it take six years of opposition pressure led by the Conservatives to finally get the Liberals to declare the IRGC a terrorist organization?

While Canada’s condemnation of the Iranian regime’s brutal attempts to quell the latest popular uprising against its corrupt and insane leadership is welcome, it flies in the face of the actual Liberal record in dealing with Iran.

On Friday, Canada joined with Australia and the European Union calling for Iran to “immediately end the use of excessive and lethal force by its security forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) … against protestors. Too many lives – over 40 to date – have already been lost.”
Also on Friday, Prime Minister Mark Carney said, “reports of violence, arbitrary arrests and intimidation tactics by the Iranian regime against its own people are profoundly concerning” and “Canada strongly condemns the killing of protesters, and urges Iran to allow for freedom of expression and peaceful assembly without fear or reprisal.”
That’s all well and good.
But it doesn’t explain why it took six years of opposition pressure led by the Conservatives to finally get the Liberals to declare the IRGC – now doing the killing, beating, intimidating and arresting of protesters in Iran – a terrorist organization.
