Commentary: The Packaging Reduction Act is greenwashing. N.Y. must do better.

The Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act is being marketed as a bold environmental policy. In reality, it is a compromise bill that would leave industry in charge and would fail to deliver the protections our communities deserve.
We share the goal of holding corporations accountable for the packaging crisis. The problem isn’t the intention; it’s the design. The Packaging Act (A1749/S1464) hands power to the very companies responsible for the waste, creating a system where polluters manage their own regulation.
