An Israeli is reportedly among the missing after at least 40 people celebrating the new year at a Swiss ski resort were killed in a fire that local authorities attributed to sparkler candles being carried too close to the ceiling.

In a statement Friday, Israel’s Foreign Ministry said it received a report that an Israeli citizen was still missing after the blaze at a bar in Crans-Montana.

The ministry said it was in touch with the family of the individual, who also holds citizenship in another country.

Meanwhile, British media said that the missing included 15-year-old Charlotte Niddam, who previously attended Immanuel College, a Jewish school near London.

“Charlotte was a student at Immanuel College, and her family has now moved back to France,” the school told the Daily Mail. “The families have asked that we all keep them in our thoughts and prayers during this extremely difficult time. We are all praying for a miracle for Charlotte and the others, and want the families to feel the full strength of the Immanuel College community’s support.”

Dozens of young partygoers hurt in the fire at Le Constellation bar on New Year’s Eve were transferred to specialist burn units across Europe with serious injuries on Friday.

Meanwhile, investigators focused on the painful task of identifying the burned bodies, warning that this process was very sensitive and would take time.

So severe were the burns that Swiss officials said it could take days before they name all those killed in the fire. The official toll is 40 dead, while 119 have been injured, many of them very seriously. Those numbers are not final, officials said.

“Many of those injured are still fighting for their lives today,” Valais area chief Mathias Reynard told a news conference.
