This goes way beyond just drinking less sugar

Your pay less for car insurance when you drive damage-free long enough.

Not only do you use more water, but you also pay more sewage charges when you live with more kids in your home. This doesn’t stimulate having more kids, but it does reflect how much wastewater service you require.

When you live healthily, you should pay less to your health fund, like this:

1. Claim that in the past two years, you have not used any hard drugs, alcohol, or tobacco (including from passive smoking), and are keeping a diet rich in fibers, and low on salt, sugar, and animal produce, and you exercise and sleep healthy amounts of time per week and don’t overwork.

2. The health fund checks you. If you are found to be lying, you pay double for two years. If you seem to have been honest, you pay half for two years.

This way, we’re in solidary with people who did not protect their health (as one should wear seat belts, watch when one crosses the street, exercise, have a healthy intake and sleep time, and not put too much strain on one’s body or soul). Violators are seen by physicians without getting a sermon.

Yet, those who take care of their health are good for themselves and society and should be charged accordingly: less.

Objections and Elaborations

This system is not perfect as bad living may give cancer in 25 years or more. So, if you stopped smoking, you may still get the bill later when you live healthily. But this system is better than nothing and entices everyone to kick all bad habits which is always beneficial—better late than never. Advertisement

True, when you live healthily, statistically, you live longer and are more “expensive” to society than people who ruined their health and will never cash in any pension or old-age payments. BTW: That, too, is unfair. People who do heavy physical work die, on average, 10 years younger. So, their old-age and pension payments should start 10 years earlier with the same sums as if they had worked ten years more. Women outlive men by 5 years, so middle-class men should get their provisions 5 years earlier.

Any good idea can be made absurd and wicked by driving it to its extreme. Pacifists pay in their income tax for the military, non-parents for schools, and non-drivers for the overextended network of roads. But that is OK.

We’re still so far away, even in a democracy, from a society built on justice and fairness. But at least here we have one thing that could be done.
