Education, values, and leadership: On President Milei’s visit to Yeshiva University
Universities exist not only to transmit knowledge but also to cultivate wisdom—wisdom that informs real-world decisions and shapes principled leadership. Yeshiva University recently had the privilege of hosting President Javier Milei for a conversation with our students and faculty.
President Milei offered a compelling reflection on how academic study and core values shape public policy. In explaining the foundations of his economic thinking, he marshalled sources rooted in the biblical and Western traditions. Citing the Hebrew Bible, the Stoics, and John Locke, he argued forcefully for the enduring principles of life, liberty, and private property.
For those of us at Yeshiva University, this was a powerful example of how serious education can inform leadership. One may agree or disagree with particular economic or political policies, but the framework from which those policies emerge matters greatly. When leaders ground their views in enduring ideas and moral reasoning, they elevate the level of public discourse and create space for thoughtful and principled debate.
This is precisely the kind of intellectual engagement we strive to cultivate in our students. A university should be a place where ideas are examined deeply, where values are taken seriously, and where disagreement is part of a shared pursuit of truth.
President Milei’s reliance on the Hebrew Bible and the broader Jewish intellectual tradition resonated strongly within our community. While many world leaders express support for Israel, it is rare to encounter a head of state who demonstrates such a deep appreciation for Jewish wisdom and its role in shaping moral and political thought. As the flagship Jewish university, Yeshiva University seeks to show how the teachings of the Hebrew Bible and rabbinic tradition continue to illuminate the great questions of modern life—questions of ethics, economics, freedom, and human dignity.
It was also especially meaningful to hear President Milei’s unwavering support for Israel. At a time when Israel faces extraordinary challenges and confronts grave threats from Iran and its proxies, moral clarity from global leaders matters deeply. President Milei has spoken with conviction about Israel’s right to defend itself and about the broader struggle between freedom and terror that Israel confronts on behalf of the democratic world.
For our students at Yeshiva University, his words carried great significance. They reflected not only geopolitical support but also a recognition of the moral foundations that underpin the Jewish state and its enduring commitment to democracy, liberty, and human dignity.
Moments like this remind us that education, when rooted in enduring values and serious ideas, prepares the next generation not simply for careers but for lives of service, contribution and principled leadership.
