The Old Guy: On the millennial vs. boomer rivalary
I didn’t finish the story about surviving COVID. Four days after I was clear of it, Joan tested positive. This followed a round of trying to get her tested on Christmas Eve. Don’t try that. Clinics close early and some don’t even take walk-ins. I also experienced a slight rebound.
That said, our plans for the next 10 days went out the window. We were basically quarantined again, twice in the same month, 20 days in all. With nothing to do and nowhere to go, I, of course, turned to the internet.
My wonderful friend Beth Gorrie, the founder of Staten Island Out Loud, a group where community members read aloud to each other, sent me a video of a 90-year-old woman blogger who was being harassed by millennials. This, of course, isn’t new. The person who coined the phrase “boomer remover” for COVID was a millennial. But, the level of vitriol was excruciating to witness. One person wrote “Time for you to pop into your forever box” (I’m guessing they meant her coffin?). Another sent her a link to (and I swear to you this is real) The Real Time Baby Boomer Death Clock, which calculates how many boomers have died, how many are still alive and how many are dying each day (the stats say one every 15.3 seconds. If you just read that statement, congratulations…you’re still alive!).
