US officials have argued that replacing Huawei and other Chinese telecommunications equipment is a worthwhile use of NATO’s newly-expanded defense budgets—unlike some other infrastructure projects.
The United States is now pushing its NATO allies to use their respective defense budgets—which have been increased to the highest levels since the end of the Cold War—to root out any technology in use made by Chinese-based Huawei over potential espionage concerns.
Bloomberg first reported that the US State Department’s China coordinator, Joshua Young, told officials in Brussels last month that NATO members should replace Huawei-made equipment. Although Young didn’t specify which countries were still using the Chinese technology, it has been speculated that the warning was aimed at Germany, which has imported some Huawei equipment for use in its telecom network.
