Blessed are the peacemakers. With these words, the Holy Quran enjoins the faithful to seek reconciliation and harmony, and Pakistan, in its conduct during the war of aggression against Iran, has sought to embody that principle. The announcement of a ceasefire between the United States and its allies and Iran and its partners marks a monumental step, one that has, for now, averted a catastrophe that loomed dangerously close.

Pakistan’s role throughout this crisis has been active and deliberate. It functioned as a conduit of communication between Saudi Arabia, the Gulf states and Iran, helping to prevent a wider regional rupture even as the conflict between Israel, the United States and Iran intensified. At the same time, it maintained consistent support for Saudi Arabia, making clear to Tehran that escalation against the kingdom risked triggering Pakistan’s defence commitments. Alongside this balancing act, Islamabad sustained a clear diplomatic position on the world stage, condemning the aggression of Israel and the United States and repeatedly invoking international law and the obligations it entails.

Lessons from Modern War

This was not passive mediation. Pakistan convened foreign ministers from key regional powers, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey, in Islamabad, creating space for coordination at a critical moment. It also moved to involve China, recognising that any durable de-escalation required the weight of a global power capable of influencing all sides. In doing so, Pakistan demonstrated a willingness to engage across multiple fronts, combining regional diplomacy with broader strategic outreach.

While much of the West faltered and the region watched events unfold with limited agency, Pakistan chose to act. It stepped into a volatile and unforgiving situation and, despite repeated setbacks, persisted in its effort to prevent further escalation. That persistence has now, at least temporarily, borne fruit.

Retention Dilemma

The ceasefire is a welcome development. It remains fragile, particularly given the history of Israeli actions that have undermined similar efforts in the past. Yet even a tenuous pause offers a chance to stabilise a region pushed to the brink. If it holds, it will not only mark a diplomatic success but also reaffirm the value of sustained, principled engagement in the face of conflict.
