They want us to doubt our own eyes

In the movie “Duck Soup,” Groucho Marx utters this famous line: “Who are you going to believe, me or your own eyes?”

Marx’s character is essentially asking the audience to ignore their own senses and accept his obviously unreliable claim.

By forcing a choice between what they plainly see and what he insists they believe, Marx exposes the absurd lengths to which authority figures will go when they expect unquestioning obedience.
