EDITORIAL: Hope, renewal and possibilities for the new year

The middle of winter seems like an odd time and place to refresh our lives.

Logically, we’d want to be doing it in the spring, when the snow has melted away and the lawnmower trades places with the snowblower at the front of the garage. When the weathermen stop measuring the wind-chill and we don’t need a coat to get the mail. When nature emerges from hibernation, the leaves and the grass start to grow, the days get longer, and the whole world seems filled with hope and rebirth.

Yet here we are, in January ... ugh, January. The start of the new year, but not much else. It’s dark more than it’s light. When we’re inside more than out. It’s cold, flu and sweatpants season. The holidays are over and all we have to look forward to for the next couple of months is a rodent seeing its shadow.

It hardly seems the ideal time to make resolutions to make ourselves........
