Is Micheál Martin fatally damaged by the Jim Gavin debacle?
THIS week saw the long-awaited publication of a report detailing the events leading up to Fianna Fáil’s presidential nomination and the disastrous fall-out from the soon-abandoned election campaign.
The report had much to do in order to satisfy party members and interested onlookers as to who knew what and when, and whether the debacle would have long-lasting impacts.
Many questions were being asked in the report, which covered everything from the lack of clarity and momentum surrounding the nomination process to the bungled campaign and eventual withdrawal of Jim Gavin as the Fianna Fáil candidate.
Although nothing in the report is likely to end any political careers in the short-term, it makes uncomfortable reading for those mentioned and has caused damage to the public image and internal structures of the party, which could be felt for a long time to come.
