House sends reconciliation bill funding immigration enforcement to Trump’s desk

House Republicans on Tuesday passed a package to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol through 2029, marking a victory for President Trump and GOP leaders.

The nearly $70 billion budget reconciliation package that had stalled in the Senate for weeks passed the lower chamber by a vote of 214-212. Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-Calif.) joined all Democrats in opposing the measure.

Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) briefly cast a no vote, leaving the tally at 213-213 — meaning the bill would fail — with no votes to spare. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) and House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole (R-Okla.) huddled with him on the floor, and he changed his vote, allowing the bill to pass.

The bill now heads to the president’s desk, where Trump is expected to sign it into law.

“The historic mandate that put President Trump in the White House and Republican majorities in both the House and the Senate is evidence of the fact that Democrats’ defund the police agenda is wildly out of step with hardworking American families,” Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said after the vote. “After four long years of Democratic policies that opened the door to dangerous criminals and deadly drugs, Republicans are delivering on our promise to restore safe streets and secure our borders.”
