Washington, D.C. police said they arrested a 17-year-old juvenile in connection to a recent carjacking of an FBI agent late last month.

Authorities said the minor and an accomplice approached the FBI agent who was standing outside his vehicle on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 29, in northeast DC.

The minor and his accomplice allegedly carjacked the federal agent at gunpoint while the agent was getting out of his vehicle.

According to police, the suspects fled the scene in the agent’s vehicle, with the stolen vehicle being recovered nearly 30 minutes later in the city's southeast.

The incident comes as the nation’s capital has seen a staggering jump in carjackings this year. The Metropolitan Police Dept. (MPD) has reported 925 carjacking this year, up more than 100 percent from 447 as of Dec. 5 last year. Firearms have been involved in 77 percent of carjackings this year, according to MPD data.

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) was a victim of armed carjacking earlier this year when he was parking his vehicle outside his Navy Yard apartment.

Overall, the city has seen a spike in violent crime in the past year, which Republicans in Congress have used to criticize the Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser and the the Democrat-controlled City Council.
